POSITION TITLE: HOUSING COURT JUDGE
LOCATION: CIVIL COURT, CITY OF NEW YORK
BASE SALARY: $ 189,900
QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to the New York State Bar for five (5) years; two (2) of which have been in an active and relevant practice, qualified by training, interest, experience, judicial temperament and knowledge of federal, state and
local Housing laws and programs. Housing Court Judges are appointed to a five (5) year term.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK:
Under the direction of Deputy Chief Administrative Judge, Housing Court Judges preside over non-jury trials and other proceedings in the Housing Part of the Civil Court of the City of New York. Proceedings relate to housing conditions and disputes between landlords and tenants, including defaults in payment of rent and defaults by either party on other obligations under a lease, as well as the enforcement of all applicable state and local laws, rules and regulations applicable to housing accommodations in the City of New York. The proceedings also include actions commenced by landlords, tenants or government agencies charged with the responsibility of maintaining housing conditions. A Housing Court Judge may recommend remedies or procedures or sanctions, other than those originally sought by the party, provided they will be more effective to accomplish compliance with the laws or to protect and promote the public interest. Assignment of actions and proceedings to Housing Court Judges, the conduct of the trial, the contents and filing of the Housing Court Judge’s decisions and all matters incidental to the operation of the Housing Part shall be in accordance with the rules which may be promulgated pursuant to Section 110 of the New York Civil Court Act.
