Temporary Staff Attorney HIV/AIDS Law Consortium (HALC), Legal Aid Society Northeastern New York
The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (LASNNY) seeks a temporary staff attorney in its Albany office for the HIV/AIDS Law Consortium (HALC); we anticipate that the attorney will be needed from late June through October. The HALC is a collaboration between the Legal Aid Society, Albany Law School’s Health Law Project, and the Albany Damien Center; we provide a single point of intake for low-income people living with or affected by HIV and AIDS to access civil legal services and family support services. The service area includes Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, Clinton, Franklin, Essex, Hamilton and Washington Counties.
Responsibilities: Will provide advice, brief service and/or extended representation to individuals living with HIV/AIDS in a wide range of civil matters, such as Social Security Disability, housing, public assistance, and advance planning. Responsible for data collection and grant reporting.
Required Qualifications: Admitted to New York State Bar. Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and providing high quality legal services to clients in civil matters. Must have attention to detail, be intelligent, hard-working, careful, reliable, compassionate, have good judgment, and a demonstrated commitment to the low-income community. Must be sensitive to the needs and difficulties that low-income clients and people living with HIV/AIDS face. Must be able to communicate effectively with clients, staff, and community agencies, and work well as part of a team. Must have a car and a clean, valid driver’s license and good computer skills. Will consider remote/hybrid core, flexible hours for the right candidate.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in working with low-income community and/or with people living with HIV/AIDS. 2-12 years legal experience. Prior experience with housing, Social Security Disability, and/or public assistance. Ability to speak a language other than English a plus
Salary: Up to $6619/month DOE, with excellent fringe benefits and union membership.
