  • MuBANY Congratulates Judge Diallo-Walker: Hon. Carolyn Walker-Diallo was recently appointed Administrative Judge of the New York City Civil Court. Judge Walker-Diallo was also nominated as a candidate for the Kings County Supreme Court! In her new position, Judge Walker-Diallo will oversee the management of the New York City Civil Court which operates in each of the City’s five boroughs, handles lawsuits involving damages up to $25,000, including small claims cases, as well as landlord- tenant and other matters. She has a proven record of success as Supervising Judge of the Civil Court in Kings County, where she adeptly navigated the many operational challenges presented by COVID-19. Under her stewardship, Kings County resolved over 25,000 matters since the pandemic’s onset. An innovative leader, Judge Walker-Diallo is widely regarded for her dedicated pursuit of justice and commitment to excellence. MuBANY congratulates her on this immense accomplishment.

MuBANY's Inaugural Mentorship Program 

MuBANY is excited to announce a new mentorship program designed to foster connection between pre-law students, law students, recent law graduates, and practicing lawyers.  This program will provide one-on-one mentorship, promote personal and professional development opportunities, and allow mentees to expand their networks in the legal community. 

Application Process: Applications are open until October 3, 2021 for both mentors and mentees. Mentors and mentees will be matched by MuBANY. Once notified, mentors will be asked to reach out to their mentee and arrange an initial conversation whether over Zoom or over the phone.

Pro Bono Opportunities to Assist Afghan Refugees

The New York-New Jersey area is in the process of welcoming a high number of Afghan refugees and both legal and other assistance are needed. As a community of Muslim lawyers, law students, and legal professionals, we wanted to provide everyone here with relevant volunteer opportunities to ensure that our new neighbors can be welcomed and helped by friendly face:

  • Pangea, Centro Legal de la Raza, and the Afghan Diaspora for Equality & Progress: these groups are coordinating a project to pair volunteer legal workers with Afghans seeking humanitarian parole into the United States. They are seeking volunteers to assist on a pro bono basis. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out this google form, and attach a signed confidentiality agreement and they will pair you with a family. Alternatively, you may volunteer to translate here.
  • Volunteers Needed to Help with Afghan Immigration Cases: pro bono attorneys are needed to help Afghans with their SIV, P-2, and humanitarian parole cases. Volunteers are needed who can provide general guidance, are willing to look over forms to be submitted to USCIS but not represent applicants, and those willing to represent Afghan applicants on a pro bono basis.   • Sign Up as Point of Contact with AILA: if you have SIV/P-2 experience, sign up to be a point of contact for AILA as they field inquiries from veterans' groups and other nonprofits that are reaching out for pro bono assistance.

Resume Request for Potential Roles in New York City Government and the Manhattan DAs Office

MuBANY is collecting resumes for possible positions with the NYC Mayoral and Manhattan District Attorney administrations in 2022. We are looking for resumes from attorneys who meet the following criteria: 1) at least 7-10 years of experience, 2) some city, state or federal government or related experience (this includes public defenders or defense attorneys). MuBANY plans to review these resumes and identify top candidates for potential referrals to the relevant transition teams.
